THEY HAVE MORE COFFEE BEANS IN THE IVORY COAST THAN ANY PLACE ELSE IN AFRICA.?

  • Description

THEY HAVE MORE COFFEE BEANS IN THE IVORY COAST THAN ANY PLACE ELSE IN AFRICA. IN FACT, AFTER BRAZIL AND COLUMBIA, THE IVORY COAST IS THE WORLD'S LEADING COFFEE PRODUCER. AND A LOT OF THE COFFEE LEAVES THE COUNTRY IN POWDERED FORM - AFTER BEING MADE INTO "INSTANT COFFEE".

LAST YEAR THE IVORY COAST PRODUCED 260,000 METRIC TONS OF COFFEE, MOST OF WHICH WENT FOR EXPORT. COFFEE IS THE COUNTRY'S BIGGEST EXPORT AND HER LEADING CUSTOMERS ARE FRANCE, THE USA AND NORTH AFRICA. FRANCE IS CONTRACTED TO BUY A MINIMUM OF 100,000 TONS A YEAR UNTIL 1970.

BUT NOW, BECAUSE OF A WORLD SURPLUS OF COFFEE, THE IVORY COAST GOVERNMENT IS DISSUADING GROWERS FROM PLANTING ANY NEW COFFEE TREES. IN SHARP CONTRAST TO MOST OTHER COUNTRIES WHERE THE CRY IS FOR INCREASED PRODUCTION, THE IVORY COAST HAS SET ITSELF THE TARGET OF REDUCING ITS COFFEE OUTPUT TO 140,000 TONS A YEAR BY 1970.

BECAUSE OF THE GROWING WORLD DEMAND FOR INSTANT COFFEE ONE OF THE LEADING MANUFACTURERS, NESCAFE, SET UP A FACTORY IN ABIDJAN IN 1962.

NOW THE FACTORY, WHICH EMPLOYS 70 PEOPLE, PRODUCES 700 TONS OF INSTANT COFFEE A YEAR. THE BIGGEST BUYERS AMONG THE 54 COUNTRIES TO WHICH IT EXPORTS ARE FRANCE, ENGLAND, AFRICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST. THE FACTORY WAS RECENTLY VISITED BY MR FRANCOIS TOMBALBAYE, THE PRESIDENT OF CHAD.
