  • Description

Townspeople began sorting through the wreckage of their homes in Goussainville, France, on Monday (4 June) in the aftermath of the crash of the Soviet Tupolev-144 supersonic airliner.

At least 15 people died, and 25 were injured when flaming wreckage, and huge pieces of the disintegrating airliner smashed into the village.

The Tupolev-144 -- nicknamed the "Concordski" -- is the Soviet equivalent of the giant British-French Concorde.

The 'plane was the first supersonic airliner ever to crash. It had been making a demonstration flight at the Paris Air Show, and appeared to break up in flight.

A Franco-Soviet enquiry is under way, to determine the cause of the disaster.
