  • Description

At least five crewman were killed when an American bulk carrier and an Algerian freighter collided in thick fog in the Straits of Gibraltar on Monday (12 June). The crewmen were from the 11,000-ton Yellowstone, which was nearly sliced in two by the 6,000-ton Algerian freighter, Ibn Battuta.

SYNOPSIS: British naval helicopters based at Gibraltar were used to take two seriously injured American sailors to the Rock, while British Navy ships searched for two other American crewmen reported missing. The submarine Finwhale was first on the scene and found the two vessels locked together. It was earlier thought the ships would sink, but there is now hope that the Yellowstone can be salvaged, and the Ibn Battuta will be able to reach port unaided. The collision happened along one of the busiest Mediterranean sea lanes, 14 miles south of Gibraltar. First reports indicated that the Yellowstone had collided with a tourist-packed Algerian ferry, also named Ibn Battuta. Fearing more casualties, naval authorities at Gibraltar diverted a number of ships to the scene. On of the rescue pilots explained what he'd seen.
