A NIKE-HERCULES ANTI-AIRCRAFT MISSILE WAS TESTED AT THE U.S. 97TH MISSILE GROUP BASE AT BOLO?

  • Description

A NIKE-HERCULES ANTI-AIRCRAFT MISSILE WAS TESTED AT THE U.S. 97TH MISSILE GROUP BASE AT BOLO POINT, NEAR NAWA CITY, CAPITAL OF OKINAWA.

THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME MISSILE IS TESTED OUTSIDE U.S.A.

BEFORE, FIRING, AN AIRFORCE OFFICER, EXPLAINED TO THE V.I.P's ASSEMBLED, THE LAYOUT OF THE GROUND AND THE PURPOSE OF THE TEST.

THEN TWO 39-FOOT SLEEK MISSILES ROARED OFF THEIR LAUNCHING PADS, ROSE TO A HEIGHT OF 26,000 FT. IN 40 SECONDS AND HIT THE TARGET. THEY WERE RADIO CONTROLLED.

WHILE THE EXPERIMENTS WERE BEING PRONOUNCED SUCCESSFUL, A GROUP OF LOCAL PEOPLE SURROUNDED THE TEST GROUNDS AND SHOUTED PROTESTS AGAINST THE TESTS.

THE OKINAWANS FEAR THAT BECAUSE OF THEIR PROXIMITY TO RED CHINA, THEIR LITTLE ISLAND MIGHT BECOME A U.S. MISSILE BASE AND SUFFER FIRST IN CASE OF WAR.

THE MILITARY POLICE SUSPENDED ALL CIVIL TRAFFIC NEAR THE BASE AND KEPT ORDER.

MEANWHILE JAPAN HAS BEEN PROMISED FOUR BATTALIONS OF THESE MIKE-HERCULES MISSILES IN 1962 AND JAPANESE SECURITY FORCES ARE NOW WORKING ON MISSILE BASES IN THEIR COUNTRY.
