    Japan's Foreign Minister, Masayoshi Ohiro, signed an agreement covering cultural, scientific and educational co-operation with Belgium in Brussels on Friday (4 May). Signing on behalf of Belgium was the Foreign Minister M. Van Elslande.

    After the signing at the Egmont Palace, the Japanese Foreign Minister had talks with the President of the Commission of the European Economic Community, M. Ortoli. Mr. Ohiro had visited France before flying to Brussels on Friday.

    Under the terms of the co-operation agreement, Japan and Belgium will exchange teachers, researchers and students and will co-operate in the organisation of artistic festivals. Another aspect of the accord covers the translation of scientific publications and literary works to implement its terms.

    SYNOPSIS: After the signing ceremony, Mr. Dhiro had discussions with the President of the Commission of the European Economic Community, M. Ortoli. The Japanese Foreign Minister had talks with other Commission officials before attending an official banquet. His visit to Brussels follows talks with French leaders the day before.
