Italy's Sandro Munari led the field the end of the gruelling first stage of the 1977 Monte Carlo rally. 186 other crews eventually joined Munari and his co-driver Naiga Silvio in Monte Carlo at the completion of the first leg on Monday (24 January). 215 cars set out from eight European capitals on Saturday (22 January) at the start of the rally - 29 of them have fallen by the wayside.

SYNOPSIS: Munari -- driving the number one Lancia Stratos -- went to the front after racing up the Roquesteron Pass. By the time the cars were winding their way down the Alps to Monte Carlo he was a clear leader.

The Fiats were expected to mount a strong challenge this year. The team's main hopes rested with Jean-Claude Andruet in the Fiat Aba 131.

However, their other-driver -- Markku Alen, also in an Aba 131 -- gave the team it's best performance. He's currently in third place.

The rally cars cover about 4,200 miles (6,800 kilometres) from the start to finish. The drivers usually brave snowstorms in the Alps and heavy rains each year, but this year the weather has been mild.

At the Monte Carlo checkpoint, Munari was the first to have his papers stamped. Guy Frequelin in an Alpine A 310 was in second place with Alen in third.

By this stage Andruet in the other Aba 130 had improved to be among the leaders.

But it was Munari and Maigo who led them away for the start of two time trial sections to be completed around Monte Carlo, before the next official leg gets underway on Wednesday.
