  • Description

ABOUT 25 PEOPLE, SOME CARRYING PICTURES OF MAIMED VIETNAMESE CHILDREN AND OTHER ANTI-WAR BANNERS, WERE ARRESTED INSIDE ST. PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL IN NEW YORK YESTERDAY (SUNDAY). THE DEMONSTRATORS STOOD UP AT THE END OF THE SERMON AND BEGAN TO DEMONSTRATE IN THE MAIN AISLE OF THE CATHEDRAL.

ST. PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL, THE MAIN ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH IN NEW YORK, IS THE SEAT OF CARDINAL SPELLMAN. THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE PROTESTING AGAINST RECENT STATEMENTS BY THE CARDINAL IN WHICH HE DESCRIBED THE VIETNAM CONFLICT AS A 'JUST WAR' AND SAID ANYTHING OTHER THAN A 'TOTAL VICTORY' FOR THE UNITED STATES WOULD BE UNACCEPTABLE.

A SPOKESMAN FOR THE DEMONSTRATORS SAID LATER THE GROUP HAD BEEN FORMED SPECIFICALLY TO PROTEST AGAINST CARDINAL SPELLMAN'S REMARKS.

AT THE END OF THE SERMON THE DEMONSTRATORS STOOD UP AND UNVEILED BANNERS AND THE PICTURES OF THE MAIMED. THEY WERE ARRESTED BY DETECTIVES WHO HAD BEEN STATIONED INSIDE THE CATHEDRAL.

THE DEMONSTRATORS OFFERED NO RESISTANCE AND WERE QUIETLY REMOVED FROM THE CATHEDRAL AND TAKEN TO POLICE HEADQUARTERS IN TWO VANS AND A FLEET OF POLICE CARS.

THERE WERE ABOUT TWO THOUSAND PEOPLE IN THE CATHEDRAL AT THE TIME, BUT MOST WERE UNAWARE OF THE INCIDENT.
