  • Description

The second general assembly of an organisation aimed at promoting African tourism in the United States and Canada opened in the Ivory Coast capital of Abidjan on Monday (22 August). It's the African Association of Tourism which was established in Kenya two years ago.

SYNOPSIS: Delegates at the Ivory Hotel were shown a large variety of exhibitions representing many of the 20 African nations taking part. The association is largely made up of 250 Americans and Canadians who are involved in tourism in their own countries.

The week-long meeting was opened by the Speaker of the Ivory Coast National Assembly, M. Phillippe Yace. His country sees tourism playing an increasingly vital role in its economy and the government is investing a large amount of capital in it. The number of tourists spending time there has increased by 25 percent in the past six years. The association president, Mr Gerald Switt, also addressed the conference. His organisation is giving Africans a chance to show what they can offer to the North American tourism trade and several sightseeing tours have been organised. Contacts are also being established with local tourist promotion agencies.
