Background: Harry S. Truman, chipper and talking a blue streak, arrived in Washington on Thursday (7 May) and gave newsmen the secret of his longevity. "Choose the right grandparents," he said.
He also commented that his habit of taking morning walks aided the veins in his legs. He added that his cane was to help him uphill on his dawn patrols -- and to top on the head reporters who ask silly questions.
Mr. Truman will spend Thursday and Friday in Washington engaging in a round of festivities celebrating his 80th birthday. He is staying at Blair House. Among the highlights of the two days are: a gold medal presented by the Austrian government for his efforts in behalf of that nation's independence and a dinner Friday with survivors of the Senate investigating committee he headed during World War II. President Johnson is expected to drop in on the latter.
