Background: Members of the International Chamber of Commerce attended their third annual conference, held at the end of October in Abidjan, the capital of the Ivory Coast. This conference is considered especially significant, because it is the first time it has taken place in a developing country. The International Chamber of Commerce -- a world-wide business organisation -- aims to encourage world economic growth.
SYNOPSIS: During the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) conference, the Ivory Coast announced the opening of a world Trade Centre, which will be dedicated to carrying out the mandate of the business organisation. The ICC has pledged to evolve a programmed designed to set up business enterprises in developing countries, thus helping to speed up their economic progress. Ivory coast Commerce Minister Maurice Seri Gnoleba officiated at the ICC's foundation ceremony for the centre. the ICC's first centre was opened in the United States in 1943.
The World trade centre will be a showplace for the Ivory Coast's export products. It will house vital statistics and documents for local businessmen and economic delegations from around the world. The twenty-eight storey building will feature a large conference hall, a restaurant and cafeteria, as well as permanent display areas.
The President of the Ivory Coast Monsieur Felix Houphouet-Boigny, attended the opening day of the three-day conference, at the Congress Palace in Abidjan. Monsieur Felix Houphouet-Boigny is known to be devoted to the economic and social development of the African continent.
The conference was leader addressed by the United Nations director-General for Development and International Economic do-operation, Monsieur Dadazie. He stressed the need for businessmen, and the ICC in particular, to help promote international, co-operation for development. Conference delegates spent three days exchanging ideas on how to fulfil this commitment.
