  • Description

THE LITTLE ROCK STORY CONTINUES TO UNFOLD. I THOUGHT ONE CHAPTER HAD ENDED ON A NIGHT LAST MONTH WHEN I WATCHED A NEGRO BOY RECEIVE HIS DIPLOMA ALONG WITH SIX HUNDRED OF HIS WHITE CLASSMATES AT CENTRAL HIGH/AN ACT FOLLOWED THE NEXT DAY BY THE WITHDRAWAL OF ALL FEDERALIZED NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS FROM THE SCHOOL.

OVER THE WEEKEND, ANOTHER CHAPTER BEGAN. FEDERAL DISTRICT JUDGE HARRY J. LEMLEY GRANTED THE LITTLE ROCK SCHOOL BOARD'S PRAYER FOR RELIEF AND ORDERED A TWO AND ONE HALF YEAR SUSPENSION OF INTEGRATION AT CENTRAL HIGH.

IN EVERY STORY THERE MUST BE CHARACTERS AND I TRIED TO FIND OUT FROM THESE INDIVIDUALS WHAT THEY THOUGHT JUDGE LEMLEY'S DECISION WOULD ACCOMPLISH.

ONE OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS IN THE LITTLE ROCK STORY HAS BEEN SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT VIRGIL T. BLOSSOM. HE HAS PROBABLY BORNE THE GREATEST BURDEN OF ANY INDIVIDUAL DURING THE SCHOOL CRISIS THIS PAST YEAR. HE WELCOMED THE COURT'S ORDER.

THE MAJOR CHARACTER HAS BEEN ARKANSAS GOVERNOR ORVIL FAUBUS. HE, OF COURSE, FEELS VINDICATED BY JUDGE LEMLEY'S DECISION .... WELCOMES IT...THOUGH IN THE PAST HE HAS EXPRESSED SOME DISDAIN FOR SOME OF THE DECISIONS OF THE DISTRICT COURT..DECISIONS WHICH HE ARE NOT FEDERAL LAW BUT FEDERAL COURT ORDERS. IN THIS CASE, HOWEVER, HE WELCOMES THE COURT ORDER. I ASKED HIM IF HE FELT HIS ACTIONS LAST FALL WERE RIGHT AND JUSTIFIED.

THERE IS A NEW CHARACTER IN THE STORY...CHANCERY JUDGE LEE WARD...WHO SEEMS AT THIS TIME TO BE THE STRONGEST CANDIDATE OPPOSING GOVERNOR FAUBUS IN HIS BID FOR A THIRD TERM AS GOVERNOR. JUDGE WARD HAS SAID HE HAS A STRONG PREFERENCE FOR SEGREGATION... BUT WILL TRY TO MAINTAIN IT ONLY THROUGH COURT ACTION. HE SAYS THAT GOVERNOR FAUBUS SHOULD DERIVE NO SATISFACTION FROM JUDGE LEMLEY'S ORDER.

HARRY S. ASHMORE, EXECUTIVE EDITOR OF THE ARKANSAS GAZETTE, WON A PULITZER PRIZE RECENTLY FOR HIS EDITORIALS DURING THE SCHOOL CRISIS LAST FALL.. ASHMORE HAS BEEN A PERSISTENT CRITIC OF GOVERNOR FAUBUS. BUT HE ALSO FEELS THE ULTIMATE SOLUTION OF THE INTEGRATION CRISIS IN LITTLE ROCK AND IN OTHER PARTS OF THE SOUTH DEPENDS MORE THAN ON WHAT ORVAL FAUBUS. DOES OR DOES NOT DO......
SOME ACTION IS BEING TAKEN THIS MORNING IN LITTLE ROCK. AN ATTORNEY FOR THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLOURED PEOPLE WILL ASK JUDGE LEMLEY TO STAY HIS RULING UNTIL AN APPEAL CAN BE FILED. IF JUDGE LEMLEY REFUSES, THEN AN APPEAL WILL BE MADE TO THE BRIGHT CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS IN SAINT LOUIS AND IF NECESSARY TO THE SUPREME COURT. AND THERE THE ISSUE RESTS FOR THE MOMENT..WITH THE END OF THE STORY NOWHERE IN SIGHT.
