Background: Brazil's full World Cup team, playing in its first game since winning the Jules Rimet trophy last June, defeated Mexico 2-1 on thursday night (October 1) in a friendly match in Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Before the game the Mexican team was presented with a "Gratitude Cup".

Mexico, wearing their green shirts, kicked off before the 170,000 crowd and quickly made advances down the right but the Brazilians easily cut the danger out and showed their characteristic speed in counter-attacking.

A centre from the right and Jairzinho (No.7) one of the great stars for Brazil in the World Cup, headed a fine goal.

Pele, the acknowledged king of football, was playing for Brazil and he was involved in mid-field activity, creating an attack in which Jairzinho tried a neat lob over the goalkeeper from close range after a flurry of goalmouth activity. The Mexican goalkeeper showed quick reflexes and made a remarkable save.

Brazil lead 1-0 at half time.

Kicking off in the second half Brazil were quickly on the attack: Tostao (No.9) went through and after holding off three defenders scored a fine goal in the right hand corner of the net.

As expected the World Champions dominated the game, holding possession in midfield until an attacking opportunity presented itself. But the Mexicans had not completely given up and a fine move started on the left by Valdiva (No.17) resulted in a fine shot by one of their midfield players (No.6).

Success came to the Mexicans when-after a move from the right a goal mouth scramble gave Valdiva the opportunity he needed and he made no mistake from close range.

But Brazil kept their goal lead until the final whistle to win by 2-1.
