  • Description

DEMONSTRATORS BURNED A SOVIET FLAG IN FRONT OF THE CZECHOSLOVAKIAN EMBASSY IN BUENOS AIRES LAST THURSDAY (6 THURSDAY). THE BURNING WAS IN MEMORY OF JAN PALACH, THE CZECHOSLOVAK YOUTH WHO COMMITTED SUICIDE IN PRAGUE LAST MONTH TO PROTEST AGAINST THE SOVIET INTERVENTION IN HIS COUNTRY'S AFFAIRS.

THE DEMONSTRATION, IN THE PRESENCE OF TEN POLICEMEN, WAS STAGED BY ABOUT 20 MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL MOVEMENT OF ANTI-COMMUNIST YOUTHS, WHO CARRIED PLACARDS AND PICTURES OF PALACH. THEY THREW LEAFLETS IN THE AIR AND PLACED FLOWERS AGAINST A PICTURE OF PALACH.

THE PROTESTORS KNELT ON THE STREET AND HELD CANDLES IN THEIR HANDS.

THE FLAG WAS BURNED AND LEFT ON THE STREET IN FRONT OF A PICTURE OF PALACH.

NO ARRESTS WERE MADE. IT WAS EXPECTED, HOWEVER, THAT THE SOVIET UNION WOULD LODGE A PROTEST WITH THE ARGENTINE GOVERNMENT OVER THE INCIDENT.
