  • Description

In Lebanon, the senior personal security aide to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, Ali Hassan Salan Abu Hassan, was given a martyr's funeral on Wednesday (24 January). Among the huge crowd of mourners were Arafat, Arab diplomats and Palestinian leaders. Abu Hassan was killed on Monday (22 January) when a radio-controlled bomb blasted his car in busy central Beirut.

SYNOPSIS: With Abu Hassan, his four bodyguards were killed in the explosion. But there are conflicting reports about the number of bystanders killed or injured.

Palestinian commandos fired shots in the air to frighten off the crowd when they arrived to remove the bodies. The PLO did not say who was responsible for the attack, but the official Palestinian news agency blamed Israel for the death of Abu Hassan. The Israelis had said he masterminded the Munich Massacre at the 1972 Olympic Games, when eleven Israeli athletes were killed.
