    The French Communist Party mustered its supporters in Paris yesterday (Wednesday) for a major protest against the round-up of Communist leaders in the Sudan. Several thousand Communists demonstrated in the Place de la Republique against what they called the "witch-hunt" in the Sudan.

    SYNOPSIS: News of the round-up of Communist leaders in the Sudan, following last week's counter-coup, brought a vehement protest form Communist Party members in Paris on Wednesday. Carrying banners calling for an end to the "assassinations" in the Sudan, they paraded in their thousands through the Place de la Republique Speakers referred bitterly to a "witch-hunt" aimed against Sudanese Communists. Party Secretary-General Georges Marchais was among the speakers.

    Some demonstrators carried portraits of the leaders of the original Sudanese coup who have already been executed. The Secretary-General told the crowds that he discerned the manoeuvres of American imperialism behind that anti-Communist campaigns in severing Arab countries, including the Sudan The French Party has written to President Nimeiry to emphasise its protest over so-called "repression of Communists.
