    Israel Zalmanson, a dissident from the Soviet Union who finally managed to gain an exit visa to live in Israel, arrived in Tel Aviv on Wednesday (16 August) to a tumultuous welcome at Ben Gurion airport. Mr. Zalmanson, aged 28, was one of 12 people arrested in 1970 for trying to hijack a Soviet aircraft. He served an eight-year prison sentence and was granted permission to emigrate to Israel on his release.

    SYNOPSIS: Mr. Zalmanson landed in Tel Aviv having spent several days resting in Vienna after leaving Moscow. He was accompanied by his sister, Sylvia, who lives in Israel and who met him in Austria. Mr. Zalmanson's two brothers, Vulf and Samuel, are still held in Soviet jails for their part in the hijack attempt which was one of the first recorded in the Soviet Union. Mr. Zalmanson told newsmen he intended to campaign for the release of all Soviet dissidents.
