  • Description

A Communist Party rally in support of the state takeover of land was attended by about fifteen thousand people in Lisbon's May Day Sports Stadium on Saturday (27 September).
The rally was also attended by the Portuguese Communist Party Leader, Doctor Alvaro Cunhal, who spoke out for the Government to vigorously follow through the takeover policy.
In recent weeks there have been clashes between pro-Communist peasants already occupying land -- mostly in the south, and supporters of the right wing land owners.
A major reason for recent fierce anti-Communist demonstrations in the Catholic dominated north of the country was the fear of many small farmers that their land will be taken over by the government.
They warned they wouldn't tolerate the move -- inspired by the Communist Party -- to seize land and there followed a bitter confrontation with rioting and the burning and looting of Communist Party offices in the north.
Meanwhile in the south, the traditional fifedom of the wealthy landlords before the revolution, the poorer peasants welcomed the land takeover. For a time the landlords did nothing, but with the rising feeling directed against the Communist Party, they have begun to hit back by demanding in some cases, the return of their property.
