    SAKHALIN, A LONG NARROW ISLAND LYING OFF THE FAR EASTERN COAST OF RUSSIA, WAS FIRST SETTLED BY JAPANESE FISHERMEN. NOW THE OVERWHELMING BULK OF THE POPULATION IS FORMED BY RUSSIAN SETTLERS.

    THE NIHVI AND MEMBERS OF TWO OTHER INDIGENOUS TRIBES - THE EVENKI AND OROKE - LIVE IN THE NORTHERN PART OF THE ISLAND.

    THE ISLAND IS MOUNTAINOUS AND THERE ARE FEW METHODS OF COMMUNICATION. MAIN CROPS INCLUDE POTATOES, VEGETABLES, OATS AND FOODER MAIZE. THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY 14,000 HEAD OF REINDEER AND OTHER FUR-BEARING ANIMALS INCLUDE BEARS, FOXES, OTTERS AND SABLES. THE ISLAND'S MAIN INDUSTRY IS FISHING - CRAB, HERRING, COD AND SALMON ARE CAUGHT AND CANNED IN THE MAIN CENTRES. TIMBER WORKING IS ANOTHER INDUSTRY OF THE ISLAND, AND MANY OF THE SOUTHERN TOWNS MANUFACTURE PULP AND PAPER.
