    MORE THAN 100 PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED WHEN A CROWD OF SOME 4,000 PEOPLE DEMONSTRATED IN BREMEN, WEST GERMANY, YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) AGAINST A RISE IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT FARES. ABOUT 40 BUSES AND 15 TRAMS WERE SO BADLY DAMAGED BY THE DEMONSTRATORS THAT THEY HAD TO BE TAKEN AWAY FOR REPAIRS.

    SOME 700 POLICEMEN TURNED OUT TO RESTRAIN THE DEMONSTRATORS, USING TRUNCHEONS AND HIGH-PRESSURE WATER HOSES. IN THE PAST FEW YEARS, TRAM AND BUS FARES IN BREMEN HAVE DOUBLED. FOR SEVERAL DAYS THERE HAVE BEEN MINOR DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST A PLANNED FURTHER RISE IN THE FARES.

    MANY PEOPLE IN BREMEN HAVE BEEN AVOIDING TRAVELLING BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT WHERE POSSIBLE. IN YESTERDAY'S DEMONSTRATION, THE BIGGEST SO FAR, SOME 100 PEOPLE ARE SAID TO HAVE BEEN INJURED IN THE CLASHES, INCLUDING TWO POLICEMEN.
