Background: Spaniard Victor Palomo on a Japanese machine won the British 750 cc motorcycle Grand Prix at Silverstone in England on Sunday (15 August), after the British and United States favourites failed to complete the second leg.

SYNOPSIS: Palomo had begun badly by taking his Yamaha into fifth place in the previous day's first leg. But on Sunday, the 28-year-old spaniard worked hard for his second place in the 35-lap race to take first overall. Mick Grant of Britain, riding Kawasaki number 10, prevented Palomo from taking first place. He rode hard throughout the race after a mediocre start, to eventually take the chequered flag at an average speed of 108.71 miles per hour (173.94 kph).

Grant, who is unplaced in the international 750 cc Grand Prix points list, took his chance to make good when the two favourites fell out. Steve Baker of Washington, a top U.S. rider, and Barry Sheene of Britain both suffered mechanical failures in the second leg and had to retire. Baker and Sheene took the top two places in Saturday's first leg.

Towards the end of the second leg it became obvious that it was Grant's race. By the last few circuits he was easily lapping the back-markers, and continued steadily to take the flag in 56 minutes, 32.6 seconds. Palomo came in less than a minute behind, to take the overall winning laurels. But Grant seemed happy enough with his second leg victory.
