Background: During a recent operation north of Pleiku in South Vietnamese Central Highlands, soldiers of the 1st Brigade of the U. S. Army 4th Infantry "Ivy" Division, located and destroyed a North Vietnamese Army bunker and tunnel complex.

A long range reconnaissance patrol (LRRP) team was given the mission of checking an area some distance from the brigade's forward base camp.

Before being air-lifted into the area by UH-ID "Huey" helicopters the team was briefed on the mission and packed provisions for the operation. LRRP team members must carry their food and equipment for the entire period that they will be out on patrol. This could be as long as 30 days or more, and they will not be resupplied by their unit. To resupply them by helicopter or air drop would give their position away to the enemy and endanger the men. A main purpose is to gain information about an area, not to engage the enemy.

Once the LRRP team does discover an enemy position, this information is radioed to the base camp. The commander then makes the decisions on actions to be taken.

Generally, the unit's artillery is called upon to fire a barrage into the enemy location. The big howitzers "soften up" the area for the Infantrymen who are sent in to investigate the enemy-held ground.

During the search and destroy mission, the patrol comes across a vacated enemy bunker and tunnel complex.

After a thorough search of the concealed North Vietnamese Army underground positions hand grenades are tossed in to destroy them, thus denying the enemy future use of the facility.
