    THE ORIGINAL 24-HOUR TRUCE WAS EXTENDED BY 12 HOURS ON SATURDAY (30 DECEMBER) IN RESPONSE TO A CALL BY POPE PAUL THAT NEW YEAR'S DAY BE A DAY OF PEACE.

    THE AUSTRALIAN TASK FORCE IN VIETNAM NOW TOTALS 7,500 MEN. A FURTHER 500 MEN ARE EXPECTED TO ARRIVE EARLY IN THE YEAR.

    DURING THE TRUCE, WHICH ENDED OFFICIALLY AT 2200 GMT ON MONDAY (1 JANUARY), A UNITED STATES SPOKESMAN SAID REPORTS SHOWED THAT THERE HAD BEEN 101 VIET CONG INITIATED INCIDENTS INVOLVING THE UNITED STATES AND OTHERS.

    AMERICAN CASUALTIES WERE PUT AT FOUR DEAD AND 52 WOUNDED.

    THE NEXT TRUCE IN VIETNAM FALLS ON JANUARY 30 -- THE LUNAR NEW YEAR -- AND IS THE COUNTRY'S BIGGEST FESTIVAL. THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT HAS PROPOSED A 48-HOUR CEASEFIRE. BUT THE VIET CONG HAVE ANNOUNCED A SEVEN-DAY TRUCE.
