Background: THE EIGHTH SPY TRIAL IN CAIRO SINCE 1956 OPENED IN THE STATE SECURITY COURT JAN 15, WHEN FOUR FRENCH OFFICIALS AND SEVEN EGYPTIANS WERE PUT ON TRIAL ON CHARGES OF PLOTTING TO ASSASSINATE PRESIDENT NASSER AND TO OVERTHROW THE EGYPTIAN GOVERNMENT.

HANDCUFFED, THE ELEVEN MEN WERE LED INTO THE CROWDED COURTROOM, WHERE CONFUSION REIGNED FOR A TIME AS PHOTOGRAPHERS CLAMBERED OVER BARRIERS TO PHOTOGRAPH THE ACCUSED. ORDER WAS RESTORED, AND COUNSEL FOR ONE FRENCHMAN ARGUED THAT THE FRENCH OFFICIALS - MEMBERS OF A COMMISSION DEALING WITH PROBLEMS OF SEQUESTRATION OF FRENCH PROPERTY IN THE EGYPT - HAD IMMUNITY AGAINST JUDICIAL PROCEEDINGS.

STANDING TRIAL ARE: ANDRE MATTEI, CHAIRMAN OF THE COMMISSION AND A COUNSELLOR AT THE FRENCH FOREIGN MINISTRY; JEAN PAUL BELLIVIER, 35; HENRI MOUTON, 44; AND ANDRE MIQUEL, 31, ALL FRENCHMEN. OTHERS ARE: GABRIEL INKERI, 75, A FORMER JOURNALIST OF ITALIAN ORIGIN, WHO HAS BROUGHT INTO COURT BUT WAS TAKEN OUT AGAIN SHORTLY AFTER. HE WAS TRANSFERRED FROM PRISON TO HOSPITAL RECENTLY WITH PROSTATE GLAND TROUBLE; ALEXANDER PAPADOPOULOU, 44, GREEN-BORN EDITOR OF THE FRENCH LANGUAGE "CAIRO REVIEW"; ADLY ANDRAWOS, 56, AN EGYPTIAN LAWYER AND FORMER AMBASSADOR TO FRANCE; FRANCOIS FERRE, A LAWYER OF FRENCH ORIGIN, AND THREE OTHER EGYPTIANS. ALL OF THE LATTER SEVEN ARE CHARGED WITH ACTING AGAINST THE INTERESTS OF THE STATE. A TWELFTH MAN, CHRISTIAN D'AUMALE, A COUNSELLOR AT THE FRENCH FOREIGN MINISTRY, IS BEING TRIED IN HIS ABSENCE.

THE TRIAL WAS ADJOURNED UNTIL JAN 17 TO ENABLE THE 20 DEFENCE LAWYERS TO EXAMINE A NOTE FROM THE EGYPTIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY ON THE SUBJECT OF IMMUNITY.
