The Australian government has given the green light for a uranium mining and export industry. Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser made the announcement in the Australian capital of Canberra on Thursday (25 August) which cleared the way for development of the immensely rich uranium province in Australia's Northern Territory. It is estimated that uranium will earn Australia about 20,000 million dollars by the end of the century and create half a million jobs as the industry develops. But the Prime Minister's announcement was immediately followed by a warning from the Labour Opposition that mining companies that defied Labour's policy could expect no mercy from them when they returned to power. Labour opts for a two year moratorium on uranium development to allow further public debate on the subject. Various demonstrations in protest of the government's decision were held in Australia, including one in Canberra, as Jim Waley, of Channel Nine, reports.
