  • Description

Australia were 249 runs for six wickets at the close of the first day of the third cricket test against England at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, on Thursday (July 13).

English captain Ray Illingworth won the toss, and sent the visitors in to bat in a move considered to be a gamble by cricketing experts. Opening batsman Keith Stackpole provided the backbone of the Australian batting -- putting up a century in 305 minutes before going out at 114.

English fast bowler John Snow took four wickets for 65 runs.

SYNOPSIS: On the first day in the third test at Trent Bridge, England won the toss and put the Australian visitors in to bat. England got an early break, and first to go was francis -- caught by Smith off Lever for ten.

Next was skipper Ian Chappell, caught by wicketkeeper Alan Knott off Snow -- his first wicket -- for thirty-four.

Snow -- here being hit for four by Marsh -- provided the backbone of the English bowling; eventually taking four for sixty-five by the end of the day.

And it's two-hundred up for Australia, much of it put there by Stackpole, who hit his century in three-hundred-and-five minutes.

Stackpole was lucky on more than one occasion -- this appeal, mainly by bowler Greig and 'keeper Knott, wasn't the only one.

Another near-fatal mistake by Stackpole. This time, he hit a Greig ball and called to Marsh for a run -- and Marsh very nearly didn't make it.

Stackpole was finally caught by Parfait off Greig at a-hundred-and-fourteen. So by the end of the day's play, Australia was two-hundred-and-forty-nine for six. With the first test to England by eighty-nine runs, and the second to Australia by eight wickets, it's still anybody's series.
