FIRE BROKE OUT ON THURSDAY ABOARD THE GREEK COASTAL FERRY "SOPHOCLES VENIZELOS" (2,741 TONS) BERTHED IN PIRAEUS HARBOUR. AS FLAMES LEAPT HIGH AROUND THE VESSEL'S SUPERSTRUCTURE HER OWNERS REPORTED THAT THERE WAS A DANGER THAT THE VESSEL WOULD BE COMPLETELY DESTROYED. BUT FIREMEN, WORKING FORM THE DOCKSIDE AND FROM HARBOUR TUGS, SPRAYED WATER AND FOAM ONTO THE SHIP THROUGHOUT THE DAY - AND WHEN THE FERRY WAS FINALLY BEACHED, LATE IN THE EVENING, THE FIRE APPEARED TO BE UNDER CONTROL.

THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE REMAINS A MYSTERY.

ANOTHER SHIP, BERTHED AT THE AMBELAKIA SHIPYARD - A SHORT DISTANCE FROM PIRAEUS - WAS ALSO ABLAZE ON THURSDAY. AND IN THE CASE OF THIS VESSEL TOO, NO CAUSE FOR THE FIRE HAS BEEN DISCOVERED. THE OTHER VESSEL WAS THE CARGO VESSEL "SOPHIA" (7,150 TONS). AN ASSISTANCE ENGINEER ABOARD THE VESSEL WAS BURNT TO DEATH WHEN HE WAS TRAPPED IN HIS CABIN BY THE FLAMES.

PORT AUTHORITIES ARE MAKING INVESTIGATIONS ABOUT BOTH OUTBREAKS.
