Liverpool....The Black Pearl of Mozambique, Eusebio scored four goals on July 23rd to pace Portugal to a come-from-behind 5-3 win over the over surprising North Koreans in the World Cup soccer quarter finals.
The Incredible Koreans leaped to an early 3-0 lead. First, Pak Zeung Sin sent in a 15 yard rocket after only 83 seconds. The second, by Li Dong Woon came in the 22nd minute and Yang Sung Kook made it 3-0 after 24 minutes of play. The North Koreans were cheered on by the Liverpool crowd of about 40,000, and at this point their good ball handling, passing and shooting had the Portuguese defence apparently split wide open.
But then Eusebio went into action. In the 27th minute he intercepted a pass and that the goalie with a left foot screamer from five yards out. Two minutes form the end of the half, he put in a penalty kick for his second. The foul had been on Torres inside the penalty area. The goal keeper had no chance. In the 57th minute the "black-pearl" put in a beautiful right footer for his "hat trick". A few minutes later, having passed the entire North Korean defence, he was fouled from behind in the penalty area, and took the shot to put his side ahead, and give his fourth goal of the day. Augusto then headed in one about ten minutes before the end to seal the fate of the Asian squad.
The North Koreans, who made their way to into the quarter finals with an upset 1-0 win over Italy, were the big surprise of the tourney. Portugal had obviously underestimated their ability, and never readily recovered from the initial shock of the three quick goals. Observers felt that it was only the individual talents of Eusebio that pulled the match out for the Portuguese team.
Eusebio now leads the 1,000 pound race for the best goal scored of the cup paly with a seven tallies in four games. The Portuguese win means they will face England, one-nil victor over Argentina, in the Semi finals.
