  • Description

Crown Prince Akihito and his wife Princess Michiko will move into a 'home of their own' at the latter part of this year. Officials of the Japanese Ministry of Construction July 18 toured the site of the GBP250,000 palace now being built at Akasaka, Tokyo, Japan.

The sprawling, two-storey structure will consist of three connected buildings. One for living quarters, and the other two for official functions and offices. All three buildings will be air-conditioned and the roofs will be overlaid with copper sheeting.

Although Western in style the architecture is blended with a mixture of typical Japanese methods. A floor space of 4,800 metres the ferro-concrete building will include a laboratory. The gardens will incorporate a pool for birds and animals, and of course a tennis court.

While the palace is being built the young Crown Prince and his commoner bride have been living with their in-laws... the Emperor and Empress...at the Royal Palace in Tokyo.
