  • Description

A MAN WITH HIS CLOTHES SOAKED IN PETROL WAS SET ALIGHT DURING THE DEMONSTRATION OF A NEW FIRE EXTINGUISHER YESTERDAY (THURSDAY). THE FLAMES WERE PUT OUT IN SECONDS WITH THE USE OF THE EXTINGUISHER, WHICH ??? A FINE POWDER UNDER GAS PRESSURE TO PUT OUT FIRES.

THE EXTINGUISHER WAS INVENTED BY AN 80-YEAR-OLD FIRE-FIGHTING EXPERT; MR LLEWELLYN EVANS. YESTERDAY, AT HIS LITTLE FACTORY IN BUNTINGFORD, NORTH OF LONDON, HE DEMONSTRATED ITS EFFECTIVENESS BY SETTING FIRE TO A MAN AND EXTINGUISHING THE FLAMES. THE MAN WAS QUITE UNHARMED.

THE EXTINGUISHER CAN BE USED IN CASES OF FIRE INVOLVING LIQUIDS OR ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES, SINCE IT CONTAINS A FINELY-MILLED DRY POWDER. ANOTHER FACTOR IS THAT THE GAS USED TO ACTIVATE THE EXTINGUISHER IS A FREEZING MEDIUM AND IS FORCED OUT UNDER PRESSURE, WHICH HELPS TO BLAST OUT FLAMES.

MR EVANS CLAIMS THE EXTINGUISHER IS PARTICULARLY USEFUL IN THE HOME, TO DEAL WITH COOKING FAT FIRES OR THOSE INVOLVING PARAFFIN AND ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES, WHERE LIQUID EXTINGUISHERS WOULD BE DANGEROUS.
