    Background: In West Germany, church youth groups and organisations keen to help Third World countries have launched a year-long campaign to induce people to buy products made from jute instead of plastic.

    SYNOPSIS: The campaign, which got under way in the northern port of Hamburg, will be carried out in other cities and towns throughout the Federal republic. The organisers hope West Germans who buy the jute bags and other articles will become mor aware of the problems of Third World countries.

    Their campaign slogan is: 'Jute Instead of Plastic'. The jute products, mostly carrier bags, are made at 40 co-operatives in Bangladesh.

    The campaigners are alerting people to what they call the wasteful use of raw materials. such as mineral oil, through churning out millions of plastic bags. They point out that production consumes large amounts of industrial energy and that the bags harm the environment - they cannot be destroyed and do not decay like normal vegetable matter.
