    BIKILA, WHO WON THE OLYMPIC MARATHON AT BOTH THE ROME AND TOKYO GAMES, CAME IN FIRST AT SEOUL IN A TIME OF TWO HOURS, 16 MINUTES AND FOUR SECONDS.

    SECOND ACROSS THE 26 MILE (42 KILOMETRE) COURSE WAS TERU TERASAWA OF JAPAN IN TWO HOURS, 19 MINUTES AND 35 SECONDS. THIRDS PLACE ALSO WENT TO A JAPANESE, KENJI KIMIHARA, WHO FINISHED IN TWO HOURS, 19 MINUTES AND 58 SECONDS.

    BIKILA WAS THE UNDISPUTED LEADER FROM THE START, BUT HE FAILED TO IMPROVE HIS OWN BEST TIME. HE WORE A WRISTWATCH THAT HE CHECKED OFTEN, AND HE WAVED TO THE THOUSANDS OF SOUTH KOREANS WHO LINED THE COURSE TO WATCH THE BIGGEST RACE EVER STAGED IN SEOUL.

    THE EVENT WAS HELD TO COMMEMORATE THE RECAPTURE OF THE CITY FROM COMMUNIST OCCUPATION IN 1960, DURING THE KOREAN WAR.
