Background: INTRODUCTION: Vitas Gerulaitis gained a surprisingly easy victory over fellow-American John McEnroe in the final of the Molson Challenge tournament in Toronto on Sunday (February 8). The stylish New Yorker made the most of his accurate serve to beat the temperamental McEnroe in four sets. The match was, however, interrupted no less than 12 times because of disputed calls.

    SYNOPSIS:
Despite seven double faults, Gerulaitis - serving here - allowed only one break against his serve.

Gerulaitis won the fist set 6-4, but then McEnroe fought back.

Levelling the score by winning the second set 6-4, McEnroe regained some of his form.

In the fourth set, there were several stoppages as McEnroe argued with the umpire over disputed calls.

McEnroe staged a last rally in the fourth set to win two more points.

But McEnroe's serve was under attack, and Gerulaitis surged ahead.

Mcenroe waits...Gerulaitis serves for the match. Gerulaitis took the point and the match. His 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory earned him 175,000 dollars.
