Argentina got off to a good start ??? the Davis Cup American Zone final on Friday (29 April) after winning the two opening singles matches against the United States. Argentine number one, Guillermo Vilas beat Brian Gottfried 6-4, 6-0, 6-2. And Argentina's second string, Ricardo Cano, had a surprising win over America's Dic Stockton 3-6, 6-4, 8-6, 6-4.
SYNOPSIS: Cano - serving here - was not very secure in the first set of his match against the powerful Stockton. The American took the first set mainly through Cano's mistakes.
But then the Argentine overcame his nerves and his game settled. Soon it was Stockton who was made to run to save points.
Cano grew in confidence as the match progressed. He returned Stockton's strong services and made several beautiful passing shots. But Cano finally took the match after one of the American's rallies was called out by a line judge. The win sent the partisan crowd wild with excitement and brought a complaint from Dick Stockton. But the decision stood and Cano took the match 3-6, 6-4, 8-6, 6-4.
For the young Guillermo Villas, there were no attacks of nerves. There was hardly any doubt during the match that he would maintain his record of not losing a singles match on a home court in five years. Brian Gottfried had no answer for the Argentine's cross-court passes. And soon the crowd of 5,000 were back on their feet as Villas won the match 6-4, 6-0, 6-2.
