To a cheering crowd of 400,000 people, Cuba's newly appointed President, Osvaldo Dorticas, announced July 26 at a public rally in Havana, that Fidel Castro had "decided to yield to public clamour for his return to Premiership." With Castro at his side President Dorticas led the ovation for the 32-year-old Premier who 'resigned' July 17 after ousting President Manuel Urrutia for "near-treason." Comprised mostly of straw batted peasants and farm workers, the crowd cheered themselves hoarse as Castro stood beaming down from a high balcony.
