  • Short Summary

Traditional thatched cottages are contrasted with new modern homes in Silver End, Essex.

  • Description

This is another version of item 964.08 - this version is probably better quality.

No title. M/S of a picturesque house with pond in the foreground and an old wheeled cart. Other homes are seen - thatched cottage. Modern home is contrasted. These are houses at Silver End in Essex. "To the old villagers, ancient notions of houses seemed to have gone wrong." Various shots of modern houses and details of their windows. "Even the pigsties changed!"

Various shots of pigs in sties and out in the farmyard. "Cows were vacuum cleaned - !" M/S of a man with a cleaning device over his shoulder cleaning a cow (?!) "And in less than four years, Silver End has been born again - the newest of the new." M/S of children playing beside a butchers shop. A large building is seen in the background - possibly the school. L/S of children playing beside the village pond with a modern house in the background.

Was an item in Eve's Film Review issue number 580.

Note: I believe that these modern houses in Silver End were built by The Crittalls Manufacturing Company to house their workers. One of the first "new towns" I guess!

    Safety print exists.
