The Liverpool to Birkenhead tunnel.
Item title reads: "World's longest underwater tunnel. To cost £5,000,000 and take 5 years to complete. Exclusive Pathe Gazette pictures taken 250 ft. down the shaft!"
M/S men at work in a shaft, drilling, moving trucks of debris. Exterior high angle shot of an open area in a city with walkways across a park. There is a brief shot of an archway and cyclists. Two men stand by a lake, a woman stands by a tree as a man takes a punt out onto a lake. M/S of a large greenhouse with a man coming out and walking away. Near a dam, some men look at the river bed below. There is a building nearby, probably an electricity power station. A nurse ushers some children inside a hut on bleak hilltop. There are other nurses in pinafores and caps with children dressed in white sun hats and grey looking knickers. The children run about in the sun in a crazy way, and the motley crew pose for the camera in their fantastic knickers, beaming. A nurse holds one nice big fat baby. (01:47:58)
M/S of a windy scene near a tree filled landscape. Pan to an industrial townscape in the mid distance. There are soldiers on horses lined up on parade and foot regiments. A gymnastics team march forward performing a stepping routine. M/S a row of policemen, awaiting inspection, shuffle about and adjust their white gloves, before standing still to attention. (01:49:42)
M/S of a Liverpool dock area. A huge crane lifts a load. Black smoke pours from a huge dock side gantry structure. Pan across to ships in dock. The next shot changes to a view of open hills and bare country near to the hydro electric dam, with its huge lake area. The camera tilts down to show the wall of the dam and back to the hills. There is a high angle shot of the building below, a power station. Next we see inside the building with its rows of mechanical equipment. A tug pulls a ship toward camera. A ferry moves fast into a dock area, and sailors make it fast with ropes on the dockside. A gangplank is set in position and men, women and children make their way off the boat. M/S of an old canon. A man with a moustache cleans the canon out with a mop. M/S of a graveyard with tombstones and crosses.
Note: These are knickers to die for - pulled well up to the armpits - these children could be orphans or refugee children.
Note: This is a long sequence of shots - the first section is obviously in the tunnel - the rest is a mixture of unknown location shots and a hydroelectric dam.
