  • Short Summary

Great footage - women of League of Health and Beauty in floaty tunics dancing about a garden.

  • Description

Women's League of Health and Beauty - late 1920s or 1930s.

    Location of events unknown.

Adult women in sheer Grecian style tunics, a la Isadora Duncan, cavorting about in a park or garden. They start by doing a dance in a circle around a small bush; ending in them holding hands overhead and each raising one leg backward. They continue in this manner; prancing across the lawn in what must be their idea of woodland nymphs - sort of skipping in slow motion.

At another point they come sashaying along in a row; sweeping their arms from side to side; and one by one go jumping off to the side and disappear! Maybe they were walking on a raised beam.

There are also double exposures of the women dancing across screen; looking like ghosts; w/ trees showing through them.

American cataloguer says: 'Very funny and bizarre. Modern dance, 1920s. Women acting just ridiculously silly and looking dazed and ecstatic with idealism'.

I think it is great footage of this famous Health and Fitness League in their early days - SL.
