The Women's National Health Association (WNHA) was founded in Dublin in 1907 by Lady Aberdeen. It was established primarily to educate the public on the prevention of tuberculosis. The WNHA was very active in the areas of clean milk provision, hygiene in the home and general public health education. Sir William J. Thompson was a physician in Dublin (prior to receiving his knighthood) and following the appointment of Lord Aberdeen as Irish Viceroy in 1907, he was made Physician-in-Ordinary to the Aberdeens. He was also chief medical adviser to the WNHA and was appointed Irish Registrar-General in 1909. He served in this capacity until 1926. He died unexpectedly on 10 June 1929. Mrs Josephine McNeill was the wife of James McNeill who was appointed Governor-General of the Irish Free State on 1 February 1928. Th Registrar-General reported to the Governor-General.
