    The nation's sixty two top spellers assemble in Washington for the National Spelling Bee Finals. Natural sound: "Every syllable is sharpened, every diphthong is in place while tension mounts." Top shot of the finalists (children) seated in a large room. CU. Girls' legs moving nervously. MS. Two girls with glasses (one black, one white) waiting nervously. SCU. Another black girl yawning. A boy standing next to mike while a man reads a word to him (natural sound). Boy answering correctly. Next comes "Follicle" and sweet black girl faces it with no hurry (she tries several times and fails). She returns to her place in tears. Only Jean Copeland of Phoenix and Sandra Sloss of St. Louis are left. The word is "Crustaceology". Both girls are standing anxious to answer. A five-hundred-dollar prize for Sandra Sloss - America's spelling champ". A man rases Sandra's hand and congratulates her. Another girl bursts in tears. CU. Sandra Sloss rises cup and diploma in the air.
