World War One; military. Various shots of US Army soldiers; location unknown but probably already arrived in Europe. Troops marching past; Army trucks at side; 2 British soldiers in BG watch. MS 2 African-American soldiers; one is helping the other adjust the big backpack. The guy moves around a bit; getting used to the weight; then they both walk off to rt. Truckload of soldiers driving past. Soldiers (looks like both black & white soldiers in last 2 scenes; although US army was not officially integrated until many years later) unloading truck.

LS white US soldiers on train platform; getting water; one helps a woman Red Cross worker to fill a pitcher; she hurries away. Same soldier dips water for the other men; each holding several cups. Next MS another soldier (this one white) wearing all his equipment; he turns around slowly modelling his gear.
