  • Short Summary

1920s cricket featuring good C/Us of many players of the period.

  • Description

Unidentified cricket item - not listed on sleeve. Seems to be a compilation of pieces from many different sources. Any information about players featured would be gratefully received.

Title of item missing. English cricketers of the 1920s. Percy Chapman, interviewed mid 1920s. Some players are seen in slow motion. One could be Percy Fender? Intertitle reads: "...and a brilliant field." More slow motion footage. "Parker (Glos)" Gloucestershire player seen in C/U inside "picture frame" device, as is "Howell - Warwick's fast bowler." More shots of cricket action in slow motion. Nice C/U of unidentified player having a smoke. Lots of other players are seen in C/U including Jack Hobbs. One player has a man standing behind him who appears to tickle his neck in a rather friendly manner! Lots of nice C/Us of the players. This looks like a compilation of pieces from many different sources. Panning team shots. Another team is shown - Australians?

Note: for search purposes: Harry Howell, Charles Parker.

Other players probably featured apart from those named are: Frank Woolley, Bill Hitch, Alan Kippax, Herbert Sutcliffe, Wally Hammond, Bill Ponsford, Arthur Mailey etc.

A researcher has written in to us with some valuable information that is worth quoting verbatim. Most of this is from 1926.

"Percy Chapman starts proceedings with a couple of hits during a match and in practice. At a guess I'd say 1924 or 1925. The major part of the clip can be divided into two parts, the first being head & shoulders shots of the England team that played the 2nd Test against Australia at Lords in 1926. The second part is head & shoulders of players such a Frank Gillingham, Lionel 'Lord' Tennyson, Percy Freeman, Walter Hammond, Charlie Parker, Freddie Gough-Calthorpe, 'Father' Marriott, Harry Howell, Jim Seymour, Fred Root & Vallance Jupp. None of them played in the same match together , so I'd suggest it's a compilation from 1925 and 1926. Spliced into the film is brief clips of Nip Pellew, Arthur Mailey, Ted McDonald, Hunter Hendry & Cec Parkin at Lords in 1921."

Can anyone narrow the dates down any further?
