    USS (United States Ship) 'Hornet' in dock in October 1941 when it was commissioned. Officer standing on flight deck lift as it rises - behind, the troops are lined up on upper deck. 'Hornet' out at sea. Various shots of planes taking off from deck during battle of Midway Isle. Various shots of 'Hornet' under attack by Japanese aircraft and submarines off Santa Cruz Islands. Japanese plane diving into sea after being hit. Hornet is struck by torpedo near Guadalcanal. Men start to abandon ship. They try to take the carrier in tow but attempts fail. Various shots of some of the badly injured being transferred from a destroyer to a cruiser by stretcher on a cable. Then other follow by breeches buoy.
