    General view of crowd gathered for the blowing up of the last two yards of rock separating France and Italy. The father of the French Finance Minister, Edmund Giscard D'Estaing presses the button which explodes the charge. The workmen applaud. Italian engineers climbing over the rubble in the tunnel to greet the Frenchmen. D'Estaing greets the Italian chief - they plant kisses on each other's cheeks. Two workmen do the same (it wasn't like this in the Mersey Tunnel link-up).

    Photographer snaps away. Crowd cheers and waves. Champagne is poured into a glass. Workmen drink champagne.
