• Short Summary

Glamorous showgirls at The Windmill Theatre knit woollen poodles for hospital children.

  • Description

    Windmill Theatre, London.

C/U of a gamine brunette showgirl sitting in a dressing room and putting the finishing touches to a white woollen poodle. She talks to someone out of shot and laughs.

M/S of another showgirl wearing a black and white basque and fishnet tights; she is sitting on a bench in the dressing room and sewing a shocking pink woollen poodle. C/U of this girl as she bites through the wool to cut it. M/S of the girl doing this in the background, while in the foreground a super glamorous blonde is checking her finished red poodle. C/U of the first girl sewing intently.

C/U of Jaqueline (Jackie) Joy putting a blue woollen poodle on the dressing table, where numerous others in different colours sit. She picks up a red one to examine as commentator tells us Jackie started the unusual knitting circle by making two poodles as birthday presents for her nieces. The idea spread among the girls until they ran out of children to make them for so they are now sent to hospitals.

Jackie sets the red poodle down on the dressing table in a row of red, white and blue poodles. We are told they all have different expressions, but these all seem fairly similar to me, apart from different eyeball positions. C/U of four of the poodles.

Note: print is quite badly scratched and is vinegar syndrome-infected. Neg used for telecine transfer. On file is a press release about Jackie Joy, plus suggested commentary for the story from the Windmill press rep. Cameraman's notes mention the names of the other Windmill girls in this story but it is not clear which is which: Annette Donlati, Linda Gray, Rosemary Phillips and Pam Bevan (one of these did not make it to the final cut - probably Linda Gray).
