Pathe have rights to clips in Time to Remember programmes but not to commentary or whole programme as screened.
Reel 4.
01:19:45 Snowy street scene in London. Boys ice skating beside a road. Great shot of a middle aged woman running then sliding along a slippery piece of pavement. She carries a briefcase and doesn't look the type to do such a thing.
01:20:07 Skiing montage. Some nice shots of groups of young people having fun in the snow - sledging. An ice skater performs some twirls - Joyce mentions Sonja Henie but I'm not sure that this is actually her.
01:21:11 Montage of famous women - all fairly short shots. Marie Curie in her laboratory, Dame Nellie Melba making a cake, Betty Nuthall taking tea, Evelyn Laye "at home", Norah Blaney and Gwen Farrar larking around, Nellie Wallace washing up, C/U of Betty Balfour, Pavlova feeding swans. Continued.
01:22:21 Sequence featuring women aviators, motor boat racers and racing car drivers. Ivy Cummins tends to her motor car then drives off with her mother in the passenger seat. L/S of a motor racing event. Jo (Betty) Carstairs in a motor boat speeding across a lake. M/S and C/U of Amelia Earhart putting on her flying helmet then climbing into her plane. C/U of Amy Johnson smiling.
01:23:15 Women explorers. M/S of a car laden down with luggage. C/Us of the two women explorers (not named) They put lots of coats on - layers for warmth! They drive off. Another two women are seen in the jungle on an expedition. Various shots of elephants in the jungle and of a cine camera being lifted through the trees by ropes. The cinematographers cover the camera with branches - presumably they are filming the elephants.
01:24:03 M/S of a woman with long hair sitting at a dressing table. She is having her hair "bobbed" or "shingled". The hairdresser may be "Emile". He holds out the hair for her to look at. It really is a contrast between the long and the short but it may be faked.
01:24:27 L/S of a fancy dress party. M/S of Albert Sandler playing the violin with a small band. (This is at a carnival ball at the Three Arts Club in London in the great ballroom of the Park Lane Hotel - see EP 093). High angle shot of the dancers. Various shots of the party - streamers are being thrown. C/Us of some of the partygoers.
01:24:51 Fashion parade in a hotel. Various glamorous outfits are modelled. C/U of the bottom of a dress, it is decorated with sequins. "Skirts are getting shorter" observes Joyce - she worries about showing her knees.
01:25:23 Lovely C/U of woman modelling a very glamorous fur trimmed coat. She holds the coat around her body then opens out her arms to show the beaded dress underneath. C/U of a woman's legs, she crosses her legs, the camera pans up to show that she is lying on the carpet reading a magazine wearing a swimsuit.
01:25:38 Joyce says "So goodbye to girlhood, goodbye to those Pams and Enids. Goodbye Daph" over shots of a group of girls in swimsuits running downs some steps in front of a riverside hotel. Various shots of the girls jumping into the water, frolicking in the river, being punted along in a boat etc.
01:26:05 A wedding dress is modelled during a fashion parade.
01:26:15 Shots of a 1920s wedding, crowds stand underneath a canopy. The bride and groom arrive by car. Joyce ends her commentary by saying "My dear, a castle in Scotland, a villa on the Riviera and simply pots and pots. Which just goes to show how right it is to give the girl a wide education doesn't it?"

Cataloguer's note: wonderful footage and a great commentary by Joyce Grenfell - full of colloquialisms of the day and funny stuff. Almost all footage in this compilation has been taken from the Eve Pic collection - it is worth checking original stories which may have extra material. -
