• Short Summary

Stars at Variety Club event at Battersea Funfair and Dorothy Provine arrives in Britain.

  • Description

Titles read: "LONDON - THESE STARS MAKE NEWS".

    Battersea Festival Gardens, London.

General view of the funfair at Battersea. Actor Sydney Tafler arrives at a Variety Club 'Star Gala' with Joy Shelton. They are followed by actors Jack Hawkins and Charles Hawtrey (not together!). John Turner and Anne Heywood talk to a group of Canadian Mounties.

Shots of adults and children in the crowds, brandishing autograph books. Disc Jockey David Jacobs signs autographs. C/U of actress Irene Handl looking around. A group of actors from the film 'The Pot Carriers' walk along arm in arm - the group includes Davy Kaye and Ronald Fraser.

Actor Kenneth More poses with two blonde starlets on the steps by the Alpine Restaurant. View of the crowds from the carousel. Jack Hawkins waves to the crowds as he rides a horse on the merry-go-round. Actress June Thorburn has a go at the coconut shy. Sid (Sidney) James is seen in a boat on the boating lake with beauty queen Margaret Bristow. Actor Harry Fowler stands on the side of the lake with his trousers down, shouting about something (apparently trying to enter beauty contest).

Slip pan to shot of American actress Dorothy Provine, star of the television show 'The Roaring Twenties' arriving at London airport. She walks down the steps from the plane and poses for photographers on the tarmac. Very pretty and pert! She then hails a 1920s vintage taxi, climbs in the back and is driven off, waving from the open back to the camera.

    Notes and cutting on file.

"A group of actors from the film 'The Pot Carriers" - also in that line-up is Campbell Singer.

Behind Harry Fowler at 01:10 is Kenny Lynch.

"a 1920s vintage taxi" - it's a Beardmore Hyper, Reg. No. GW 2700. This vehicle has been preserved and is now on show at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow.
