• Short Summary

Manufacture of an aircraft canopy, plastic bath and refrigerator lining at a factory in Dunstable.

  • Description

At a factory in Dunstable, Bedfordshire we see M/S and C/U of some men carrying a large sheet of soft plastic (cockpit cowling) which they drape over a mould and fix into position. M/S as a man in a white coat fixes a semicircular piece of wood to the end of the mould, and they clamp this into position. This is the early stages of the aircraft canopy.

M/S of a woman checking a section of plastic canopy for flaws; C/U as she marks the flaws by circling with a red pencil; M/S as she pours some liquid onto the area and starts to polish it. M/S from inside the cockpit cowling of another woman polishing on the outside; low angle shot of her polishing. M/S of another woman working on the opposite side of the cockpit cowling; she starts to polish with an electric buffer. C/U from over her shoulder as she buffs.

M/S of some men preparing some plastic to be made into a bath; C/Us as they fit some suction cups in place. M/S as they raise the plastic and remove a cover from beneath the plastic where there is a bath mould and lower plastic into position. C/U as a man shifts a lever on the machinery, then M/S as the upper mould is lowered down; C/U of a man looking on. M/S of the moulds shaping the plastic from above and below, then C/Us of the clamp levers being undone; M/S as the mould rises. C/U of a man pulling a lever on the equipment, then M/S as the men lift out the plastic bath shape and place it on a pile with others.

C/U of a woman putting a piece of plastic in position on a press to be made into a refrigerator lining; M/S as the woman pulls a lever then C/U as a frame is lowered and M/S as a heater moves over the plastic. C/U of the woman watching; M/S as the heater moves off, then we see the plastic blowing up and out of the frame in a huge bubble. C/U of the bubble, the mould coming up inside the plastic, then the air is withdrawn so the plastic takes the shape of the mould and the woman's hand comes into shot to smooth it. M/Ss of completed lining in machine and the woman lifting it out to check it.
