Mercedes Gleitz breaks the record for endurance swimming.

"Forty-six minutes is a good swim for most people, but here's a lady who broke the woman's record in South Africa, with one of forty six hours - Mercedes Gleitz."

M/Ss of Ms Gleitz swimming in a pool. She swims over to the edge of the pool to sign an autograph. Overhead shot of her swimming on her back. She swims to the edge of the pool and is given a cup of tea. She drinks the tea whilst treading water.

"Drinking, reading - signing autographs - something has to be done to keep your mind off the minutes dragging slowly on - " M/S of Ms Gleitz reading a newspaper in the pool. C/U of Ms Gleitz smiling as she swims. Presumably this is footage of a record breaking attempt.

Despite the title-card, this lady's name is Mercedes Gleitze.

She was a prolific record-breaking swimmer in the 1920s and 30s. Some of her many feats can be found here - click on the image of Mercedes to find an autographed photo that confirms the spelling of the surname.....

Mercedes Gleitze can be seen in several other Pathe lips too.
