Long film showing all the ins and outs of how a car works.
Reel 8. The universal joint is described and illustrated through diagrams and animations. Various joints are shown. C/U and drawing of a joint. Joint is taken to pieces. C/U of flexible fabric discs of a particular type of joint. The propeller shaft is turned. C/Us of propeller shaft and of its mechanics. C/U of the bevel pinion and crown wheel in motion. Torque reaction is explained via a diagram. The back axle is featured. The chassis of the car is turned upside down through 180 degrees to show the location of the axle. Dissolve to show internal workings. Cog turns. Two axle shafts with wheels on the end are balanced on plinths and manoeuvred by two mechanics. This is to show how the wheels turn differently when a car turns a corner. C/U of ends of axles being turned by hand. The differential is described. Stop frame animation shows how wheels turn when cornering. Animation shows problem that would arise if both wheels were solidly connected on the axle - constant skids and ruined tyres. The differential is seen in C/U. Cogs are placed on the struts. This is then placed between the axle and moved by hand to show how it works. The crown wheel is shown. Screws are affixed. Wheel is turned by hand. C/Us of the mechanisms. Demonstration of the movement of the axles and wheels. Mechanic attaches a chain to one of the wheels to prevent it moving around.
