This story, reported via the Associated Press in June, 1950 in dozens of American newspapers, inspired the book A Present for the Princess by Janie Lowe Paschall, with illustrations by Elizabeth Webbe (1959: Rand McNally Tip Top Elf Books). A radiant little blind boy, hearing of a visit to his village planned by a beautiful young princess around his age, sets out with the aid of a scarecrow, the forces of nature and his own tender and devoted care to grow as a gift for her the reddest, juiciest strawberry ever seen.
